Newsbrief: War Crimes in Syria being investigated by the UN

by Aaron Santini

A commission in the United Nations is investigating the possibility of war crimes being committed in Syria, according to The New York Times.

The chairman investigating the possible crimes met the ambassador of Syria only once, and that was a chance encounter. However,  after a statement from Bashar al-Jaafari, a Syrian envoy, it doesn’t appear that the country will be helpful towards the investigation.

“We don’t have any hope that the Syrians will cooperate with us,” al-Jaafari said.

It would be hard to have a successful trial, even if the investigation uncovers evidence of war crimes.

According to Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, who is the UN commission chairman, “The prospect of an I.C.C. referral is zero.”
