Op-ed: Let’s change our attitude about athletes and academics

Athletics lead to better grades due to improved time management, better discipline, and having study hall hours, but too many members of the Franklin Pierce community do not recognize that.

As a collegiate athlete myself, I can attest to the fact that my grades are better when I am in season as opposed to the off-season. When I am in season I have to complete at least five hours of study hall so at bare minimum I am doing school work for five hours a week. On top of that, our professors have to report to our coaches on our progress in the course and if we are doing poorly in a class our coaches are immediately notified thus making us work harder.

Senior football player Jack Ainsley said, “I definitely get better grades during the season than I do in the off-season. While in season I am far more organized and my time management skills improve significantly because I know that I have certain hours of the day that I have to get my school work done.”

AVID Weekly stated, “When you are out of season, you are more likely to sleep through morning support and push things off because you feel like you have a lot of ‘extra time,’ and you just can’t afford to do that during the season.” Due to the structure of an athletes schedule just focused on their sport, athletes must design organized schedules to complete all of their academic work.

When being physically active your brain becomes healthier and increases focus and memory. The New York Times reported, “children who are more active are better able to focus their attention, are quicker to perform simple tasks, and have better working memories and problem solving skills than less-active children.”

Based on studies and personal experience, I believe that sports teams while in the off-season should still require at least four lifts/practices per week as well as team study halls to ensure that students are still staying on top of their work. When there is more structure in ones life the better one’s performance is.

I also think that the rest of the student body should realize the benefits of being a student athlete.
